What Should a Newborn Sleep In? Sleep Sacks, Blankets and Safe Sleep Basics
A newborn generally does not need a loose blanket or duvet to stay comfortable while sleeping. A simpler approach is appropriate sleep clothing combined, when needed, with a well-fitting infant sleep sack or wearable blanket. The baby's sleep space should stay clear of pillows, soft toys, bumpers and loose bedding. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a firm, flat sleep surface with a fitted sheet only and suggests clothing layers or a wearable blanket if parents are concerned about their baby feeling cold. NHS guidance also supports properly fitted baby sleeping bags and matching their TOG rating to room temperature.
